Leierer Farm and Ranch Cattle Dog Trial January 1 2011 Branch AR 72928
|
|
|
|
Hi folks, well we started off 2011 by attending the Leirri Cattle Trial. It was a very cold and windy day, but David had big bone fire going, but some people (me) would not get out of the truck. Since it was January first, Twils fixed us all a big dinner of "black-eye peas & ham". This is very nice little trial. David & Twila do a very good job of running the trial and making all feel welcome. If you have never made it to this trial, then I would suggest that you try to come to it. -- tom

Bar None Cattle Dog Trial Mountain Home, Arkansas February 19th and 20th, 2011
One of the "first trial", that I've been to in awhile. Randy Bradford and Myra Jines did an outstanding job in pulling it all together. The cattle worked fair for all, they were all very equal. Randy had to use the same calves more than he wanted to, but he did a really good job in keeping the coursed changed up on the calves. We are looking forward to next year. tom

Mid States Stock Dog Association Cattle Dog Trial "Walker Arena" March 5, 2011
|
|
|
|
The Prairie Grove cattle trial was a lot of fun. Dale Kuhrt judged Open I/II, Danny Shilling judged Nursery, and Bob Roe judged Novice and Ranch. Bob Roe won both Open classes and the $100 donation – donated by Colleen Tomczak and friends in memory of Dr. Meyer, DVM. Marvin Daniel and Ben won Nursery, David Leierer and Opie won Ranch, and Michael Povey and Tina won Novice. Thanks to the judges, Lois East for her exceptional administrative work and to those that helped set out and scribe. Twila Leierer

SERENDIPITY CATTLEDOG TRIAL March 26/27 - Clinton, MO. Judge - Linda Meyer
This was a very tough trial for a number of reasons. Saturday was cold & windy, at times we had rain, sheet, and even snow. When the cattle were turned out for runs, then they would head to the barn for shelter, but that was an equal problem for everyone. Sunday was a little better, in the fact that we had no sleet or snow. It was still very cold and breezy, and the cattle wanted back in barn. Once again some people (me) sat in the truck both days. Lyle & Lois East did a outstanding job with the trial, with all the unexpected problems that they had to coup with. This is a trial that we will go to next year. :) tom

BENEFIT STOCK DOG TRIAL Republic, MO. FFA & 4-H April 16/17, 2011 Cattle & Sheep
This is one my favorite trials of the year, and it's just a little arena trial, but it's almost like a reunion. This is the one trial that it seems like all MSSDA members try to make, so people you rarely get to see will be there. Getting to see and visit with Robert Barlow was the highlight of the weekend for me. The trial is a benefit for the local FFA/4H clubs, and it's always so refreshing to see so many kids active and working the trial. My hats off to all the kids and their teachers! OH, and I thought our dogs did respectable.

TABER STOCKDOG TRIAL (Sheep) Walnut Grove, MO April 30 – May 1, 2011
|
This was the first year that we have been able to make it to Roy's trial. Roy & Sue put on a very nice trial, and Danny Shilling was the judge and did his normal good job! (seems like a lot of folks any more are of the opinion only people that speak funny can judge a trial, so I guess I need to teach Danny some Cherokee) LoL Sue was busy posting scores, and provided lunch for everyone on both days. The field is a National level field, with the Open Outrun nearing 400 yards. At some point during the outrun (either way) the dog is running blind for a time. When you come to this trial next year, if your goal is to make the top 10 on both days, then you better bring your "B" game or better, if your goal is to make the top 3, then you better bring your "A" game or better! We took Cap to see if he could still handle a big field, and this was pretty much where we decided to "scratch" him from the Cattle Final. On Saturday it was nice and we got to visit with many old friends, and got to meet some nice folks. Sunday it rained most all day, so most folks (myself included) just set in their trucks to try to stay dry, so it was a long day. Thanks Roy & Sue for all your hard work! - tom

We went, we saw, BUT we did not conquer, BUT we had a great time. We got to see and visit with some old friends from our days at the LSCDF, and we made some new friends. We had a mixed bag of weather, I think we had everything but snow. With all that the souvenir I brought home - was a "summer cold". :( We both hope that we get the chance to compete again, BUT with a much better outcome next time. :)
We want to Congratulate Jimmy Walker/ Mitch the 2011 Open Champion, and Jerry Davis/Juanita 2011 Nursery Champion, and less we forget the trial host Bob Johnson, and his crew for the "outstanding" job they did. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!! - tom

Well, we are home and had a great time at the Nationals. I didn't finish near as high up as I had hoped, but we had a great time and I'm so glad we went!
Curly Bill did a really nice job on the First Go of the qualifying rounds. Did a nice outrun, but crossed over right at the top when he saw the horses….his first time to do an outrun with horses at the setout... But they didn't hit him very hard for that. We did a nice lift, got the fetch panels, drive panels and time line plane. I didn't move over to the Y shoot quick enough (according to folks on the side line) and let one get enough speed up that he was able to bust thru to the exhaust…..So Curly and I went after him, but there was no getting him back after that…… that was a mistake on my part, I should have went ahead and worked the 2 that stayed thru the obstacles, my time expired before the calf left the trial field, so I still got the points I had accumulated up to that point…. So that was good. Curly worked really really nice….took all my whistles, flanks, lay downs….. I couldn't have asked for him to work nicer. The mistakes that were made were Handler error :)
On the 2nd Go of the qualifying rounds, we were the last run of the day…… that means we had all been up since 4:00 am that morning and now it's 8:30 pm……. So it's been a long day for all of us. Curly didn't listen near as nice as he did that morning. He did a really nice outrun…horses didn't bother him this time, nice lift. They were coming right at the fetch gates and I thought I might ought to flank so I wouldn't lose them to the exhaust after they went thru……. Big mistake…..I pushed them right out of the fetch panels…… and from that point on, I was just fighting to keep them on the course…….. I pushed them all the way from the exhaust across the field to the post and got 2 around the post and my timeline, but missed the drive panels and cross drive……. Was just a fight to keep them from going back to the exhaust….. I wasn't able to make much forward progress….so ran out of time….. So that wasn't near as fun as the 1st go…..
I wanted to let the OSDA know how much I appreciated them being my sponsor for the USBCHA National Cattledog Nursery Finals! - Ruth

I would like to thank Glenn Christensen for giving me the opportunity to purchase LINK back from him. LINK is a litter mate to our good Curly Bill dog. LINK shows alot of great potential. His natural herding ability is is very good. He is a very personable outgoing dog.
We feel that LINK will be a plus to our breeding program.

Sad news to share, we lost a great handler this morning (8/31/11), Pete Carmichael of Timber Lake, SD.
Please say a prayer for his family and countless friends, he was one that would take any new hand that was interested in working dogs under his wing.
Pete, Tom & Ruth at this year's National Cattle Dog Finals.
I first met Pete at the 2003 Lone Star Cattle Dog Futurity. I was honored to be able to call him my friend.
Pete, you are already being missed by many!

We are thrilled to have Doc! We were so impressed by his offspring (Wink and Slick) that we just couldnt wait to bring Doc up to us from Oklahoma! He is a seasoned and impressive trial dog and while we never doubted his abilities, we did wonder how he would adjust from trial scenarios to open range work. No need to wonder! Doc is an amazing dog and is highly intelligent and athletic. He is a completely natural worker and has the perfect amount of bite and herding. He adapts quickly and is very good at "reading Steve's mind"! He has fit right in and we have come to rely heavily on him in a short amount of time. Doc is strong and tough on wild cattle and pairs, but has enough finesse and style to work sheep also! Doc is truly the total package! Every single time we watch him work, we are more impressed by him!
Doc is a sweet natured dog and is VERY well behaved! You never have to tell him anything twice! Our son thinks Doc is his new personal jungle gym, and luckily Doc loves every minute of it! We are very excited about the prospect of producing more of Doc's progeny. He is a phenomenal producer and we are grateful to now have him! Thank you Oaktree Border Collies!

Folks, this is a fun little arena trial, if you don't have down on your schedule of trials to make, then your missing out on a fun day. There's all different kinds of dog events going on all day, from Dock Diving, Shows, Dog Vendors, ect, and then we end up the day's events with our club Sheep Dog trial. - tom
I want to thank everyone that was involved in the Claremore Dog Expo demos and trial. It was bigger than last year and we are very thankful for that. So again thanks so much for making it happen! We couldn't hold these trials without all our wonderful volunteers! - Jenna

Wow! The fair board wanted 2 all day shows and that's exactly what they got. We had to close entries to both the cattle and sheep trial before the day of or we wouldn't have finished on time. What a huge success and I'm so happy and proud of the OSDA for all the hard work. Special thanks to Susan Bennett for all her hard work getting the trial organized, to Mickey Welsh for being our cattle trial course director, Yancy Paul for his awesome sheep and cattle, and of course Cindy Barrett for all her secretarial work, what would we do without her! We couldn't have pulled it off without the help of many others volunteers who helped scribe and do anything that needed doing. Including several out of state handlers who just stepped right in with out being asked to help tear down and set up the courses. Thanks again everybody! So proud to be a part of this wonderful world of stockdogs! Looking forward to next year! - Jenna

We want to thank all the sponsors, volunteers & must of all, all the handlers, because without you, then there is no trial. - tom
